A small hydroelectric plant on the Stórá river in Bø has received environmental approval from the Faroese Environment Agency, Kringvarp Føroya (KVF) reports.
The agency approved the environmental impact assessment submitted by Hera Guttesen after a public consultation period during which no objections were raised.
The plant will use water from Stórá to generate electricity, feeding into the grid operated by SEV. According to the assessment, it is expected to produce 400,000 kilowatt-hours annually, reducing CO₂ emissions by 250 tonnes per year.
Water will only be diverted to the plant when river flow exceeds 40 litres per second. The maximum intake is 77 litres per second when flow is between 117 and 40 litres per second. Water will be transported from the intake to the plant via a 760-metre pipeline west of the river.
The approval decision can be appealed to the Faroese Appeals Board (Kærustovnin) by 13 July.
