A new season of the Viimeinen johtolanka podcast, published Tuesday by Yle Areena, presents previously unknown information about a series of violent crimes against women in the 1990s, including at least two linked to a remote forest area near Hausjärvi.
In April 1991, the body of Tuula Lukkarinen, a woman from Tuusula, was found brutally killed near a birch tree in the woods between Hausjärvi and Hyvinkää. Months earlier, Helena Meriläinen from Riihimäki had survived a violent attack in the same area. Both cases remain unsolved.
Investigative journalist Marko Niemi, host of the podcast, reports that Lukkarinen had borrowed a large sum—50,000 Finnish markka—shortly before her death, raising questions about a possible financial motive. This detail, along with other new leads, challenges the long-standing theory of a single serial offender, dubbed the “Järvenpää serial killer.”
Another case potentially connected to the same series is the 1993 disappearance of Maarit Haantie from Riihimäki. While the National Bureau of Investigations (KRP) has explored links between the cases, no definitive connection has been established. Haantie’s remains have never been found, and Meriläinen, who survived her attack, died a few years ago.
Niemi also uncovered claims that a man had confessed to his brother’s involvement in Lukkarinen’s murder. Additionally, a woman reported being sexually harassed as a schoolgirl by a man whose description matches the suspected profile of the Hausjärvi attacker.
The KRP confirmed that the investigations into Lukkarinen’s murder, Meriläinen’s attempted murder, and Haantie’s disappearance remain active, with new tips periodically reviewed. Authorities have not verified or dismissed the podcast’s findings but stated that all relevant information is assessed for its potential to advance the cases.
Niemi, who previously covered these cases on the police procedural show Poliisi-TV, said the Järvenpää serial killer theory has long intrigued him as a journalist. The KRP emphasized that while leads are examined, premature conclusions cannot be drawn.
