First-grade pupils in the Faroe Islands are so poorly proficient in Faroese that they often use English words instead, according to a specialist teacher speaking to Faroese public broadcaster KVF.
Fridrikka Kjeld, a special education teacher, dyslexia specialist, and head of the Førleikastovan playgroup at Fuglafjørður school, said the children’s vocabulary is now so limited that they replace Faroese words with English ones. She added that their language skills at the start of school no longer match first-grade expectations.
