Ice cream shops across Denmark are now offering lactose-free treats for dogs, with flavours including chicken, salmon, and liver, reports DR.

In Lundeborg on southern Funen, Lundeborg Strandcafe has sold the dog-friendly ice cream for a second year running, with owner Dorthe Sørensen noting strong demand.

“The dogs love them, and customers keep coming back to buy them for their pets,” she said.

Jens Jokumsen, head of family pets at animal welfare group Dyrenes Beskyttelse, said the trend reflects deeper bonds between owners and their dogs, with spending on pets rising—including holiday gifts and advent calendars.

“We treat them almost like humans in many ways. So it’s natural that when I go to get an ice cream, I’d also want to buy one for my dog,” he said.

He advised owners to ensure dogs lick the ice cream rather than swallow it whole, as large cold chunks can upset their digestion.
