The Government intends to allow municipalities to levy fees for services provided to properties that are unoccupied.
Bjarni Kárason Petersen, the Minister of Justice, has indicated that the fee will likely be around 1,000 krónur, possibly less.
The request for this authority initially came from the municipalities themselves, as stated by Tórbjørn Jacobsen, chairman of the Municipal Association.
“This will particularly benefit smaller municipalities, as they will be expected to have the authority to impose fees for services provided to homeowners who do not reside within the municipality,” he explained.
Jacobsen emphasizes the importance of having a fixed fee applicable to all municipalities. He believes that everyone who owns a property should contribute to the municipalities financially.
