A large oil spill has been reported in Kvillebäcken on Hisingen island in Gothenburg, according to public broadcaster SVT, citing Göteborgs-Posten.

Emergency services were alerted on Sunday morning and have worked throughout the day with city environmental authorities, the environmental agency, and police to contain the leak. Officials estimate the oil has spread more than 1.5 kilometres along the stream.

The source and volume of the spill remain unknown. Rescue services suggest heavy rain on Saturday may have washed the oil into the waterway, according to Peter Johansson of the emergency services.

Several birds have been trapped in the oil, and animal rescue teams have responded. Cleanup efforts will continue on Monday.
