Haltiala farm in Helsinki reopens as alcohol-free family destination
Haltiala farm in Helsinki has reopened under new ownership with a revised concept, dropping alcohol service and refocusing on families, Yle reports.
The farm now divides its offerings into a free petting zoo area and a paid farm park featuring activities such as mini-golf, pony rides, and an electric go-kart track. New additions include alpacas, multiple food stalls, and a sun terrace.
Changes initially sparked concern among locals, with rumors circulating about the future of the popular summer spot. Klaus Karjula, CEO of Lännentila which operates the farm, said fears included noise from the go-kart track disrupting the natural peace. However, the track uses nearly silent electric karts, addressing those worries.
Since its June reopening, the farm has drawn about 30,000 visitors in its first week, with mostly positive feedback. Karjula noted that the decision to stop serving alcohol—part of the original concept—has drawn mixed reactions. While some long-time visitors like Saila Kämppi, who previously enjoyed drinks with friends at the farm, now see it as purely child-focused, Karjula defended the move as aligning with the farm’s new family-friendly direction.
Future plans include expanding year-round operations with local food production, a sauna, farm accommodation, and a ski café, though these may take several years to implement.
