The Faroese ferry operator Strandfaraskip Landsins needs to withdraw one of its vessels to ease pressure on the Smyril route between Suðuroy and the main islands, according to the company’s director, Dánjal Samuelsen.

With the summer solstice celebrations now underway, an additional 4,000–5,000 people are expected to travel between Suðuroy and the main islands, straining the ferry’s capacity. The Smyril currently carries nearly 1,000 passengers per trip.

“This is a major challenge that needs to be addressed,” Samuelsen told public broadcaster KVF.

Extra sailings have been added, including an additional round trip on Saturday and three on Sunday. More crew have been assigned to manage the increased traffic, and mandatory rest periods for staff must be observed. The ferry Teistin will also cover some routes to relieve the pressure.
