Midsummer weather allows bonfires but sun protection advised
Midsummer celebrations across most of Finland will enjoy warm and sunny conditions, with temperatures in the south and west potentially reaching heatwave levels, according to Yle meteorologist Matti Huutonen.
In Lapland, the holiday will be cooler and wetter, with temperatures around 15°C and rain spreading from the west during Saturday. Windy conditions are also expected, particularly along the western coast of Ostrobothnia, where gusty southwest winds will prevail.
A UV radiation warning is already in effect for the Åland Islands and Southwest Finland, and will expand to cover much of southern and western Finland by Sunday. Sun protection is strongly recommended.
Sunday will bring more unstable weather, as a cold front introduces thunderstorms and rain to southern and eastern Finland. Some areas may experience severe storms, though temperatures in the south will remain high as the warm air mass shifts eastward.
Bonfire enthusiasts can light up safely nationwide, as no forest fire warnings are currently in place. Recent heavy rainfall—up to 70 millimetres in parts of eastern Finland—has eased long-standing drought conditions in the region.
