Tórshavn city council has approved a special building permit allowing City Church to expand its rebuilt structure beyond standard zoning limits, KVF reports.

The church, which suffered major fire damage in February 2024, plans to construct a new building that may also serve as a community space for concerts, public events, and its City Meal program. The proposed structure exceeds the size permitted under general zoning regulations for the area.

Under the special permit, the new building must not cast a shadow more than 10 meters into Grasagarður park at the spring equinox. The city’s building department noted that such tailored permits are becoming more common as urban density increases, though they raise construction costs.
