The Faroese Marine Research Institute has recommended issuing a trial fishing permit for redfish in the deep waters of the Banka area, and the Fisheries Council has approved three such applications, including one for the JFK trawler in Klaksvík, according to a report by Kringvarp Føroya.
JFK has attempted to develop this type of fishing for five years without success, said Hanus Hansen, the trawler’s skipper. “It’s been too costly to waste energy on something that doesn’t pay off,” he told KVF.
Redfish is a significant part of the Faroese ecosystem. The trial permits allow a maximum quota of 15,000 tonnes, representing about 2% of the total redfish stock in the Banka area.
