One dead after motorboat sinks near Kotka

A motorboat sank near Kotka’s Kuutsalo on Thursday, killing one person, Yle reports.

Emergency services received a report of a water traffic accident northeast of Kuutsalo at 14:54. The boat, a seven-metre covered motorboat, had two people on board when it went down near Vassaari.

One person was rescued and taken to hospital. The other was found dead inside the sunken vessel after a search lasting several hours.

The maritime rescue centre led the operation. Police have opened an investigation into the cause of the accident but have not released further details at this stage.
