Turku is set to grant another extension to Turun Ratapihan Kehitys Oy (TRK) for securing financing for its planned railway station arena project, reports Yle.
The company, which aims to build a major event arena and adjacent residential area near Turku’s railway station and Logomo, had previously received a one-year extension last summer to raise the necessary funds. That deadline expires at the end of July.
TRK has now requested an additional extension until the end of 2026, which the city board will consider today. The city had previously stated in January that no further extensions would be granted.
The project involves purchasing a 42.5 million euro plot from the city, which Turku originally acquired from VR Group in summer 2023. The development includes a hockey and event arena, as well as a new district for up to 1,500 residents.
TRK cited ongoing negotiations with investors and builders, as well as a sluggish housing market, as reasons for the delay. The company stated that selling residential building rights at the required price level has proven difficult in the current real estate climate.
TRK’s board chairman, Ilkka Kilpimaa, declined to comment, saying the company would wait for the city’s decision before proceeding.
