Bjarni Kárason Petersen, the former Faroese minister of legal affairs, has stated he would have annulled the municipal election in Runavík if he had the chance, according to a report by Faroese broadcaster KVF.

Petersen, who served as minister when the decision to hold a re-vote in Runavík was made, said the election should have been invalidated from the start. His remarks follow a court ruling that acquitted a man accused of electoral fraud in Oyndarfjørður in connection with the Runavík municipal vote.

“It was the right decision to annul the municipal election, and if I had the opportunity, I would have done it immediately,” Petersen told KVF.

The court has not ruled on whether electoral fraud occurred in Oyndarfjørður.
