New prison at Áir to open in 2030

The new prison at Áir will be operational by the end of 2030, according to Eyðstein Zachariasen, mayor of Sunda municipality, reports KVF.

The facility will replace Varðhaldið in Mjørkadalur and house 36 inmates.

Zachariasen said work is underway to advance the project and address concerns raised by the public.

Sunda municipality recently held a meeting with representatives from Danmarks Fængsler (Danish Prison and Probation Service) to discuss the plans.
