Central Finland police have launched a pre-trial investigation into the death of a newborn during a home birth in 2024, Yle reports.

Chief Detective Inspector Pasi Nieminen confirmed to Finnish news agency STT that the case is under investigation but declined to provide further details.

In February 2025, Yle reported that police were examining whether a midwife present at the birth may have committed an offense under Finland’s criminal code for causing death. Nieminen said the case is expected to reach prosecution consideration by autumn 2026.
