A suspected military explosive was found near Kymi Airport in Kotka on Sunday, prompting a police response and temporary closure of the area.

A civilian reported the rusted device, believed to be a mortar shell, to authorities shortly after 14:00. Police cordoned off the site and requested assistance from the Finnish Defence Forces, who removed and will dispose of the ordnance.

The discovery occurred during the Jukola Relay orienteering event, but officials stated there was no danger to the public.
