Helsinki police have opened a preliminary investigation into the damage caused to a memorial bench dedicated to Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, Yle reports.

The memorial, located near the Russian embassy on Neitsytpuisto, was damaged by fire last week. It had been installed just over a week prior.

Detective Inspector Tommi Lehtonen confirmed the crime is being treated as criminal damage. Authorities are currently checking for surveillance footage of the incident, though no eyewitness accounts have been reported.

Police have not yet requested footage from the adjacent Russian embassy but are considering cooperation. Lehtonen acknowledged the sensitivity of the case given global events but noted that a request for recordings may still be made.

The investigation could take several months, or conclude quickly if no evidence is found.
