Lappi leads Finland in roadside waste per capita

Finland collects over a million kilograms of roadside litter annually, with Lappi alone accounting for more than 200 tonnes, according to regional development agency figures reported by Yle.
While the Helsinki metropolitan area generates the highest total volume, Lappi has the most waste relative to its population and road network. Small plastic debris poses a particular challenge, as mowers shred it into microplastics that enter waterways and eventually the human body, said Joonas Peltoniemi, maintenance supervisor at the Lapland Centre for Economic Development.
Contractors in Lappi remove everything from refrigerators to construction waste, according to Mika Ojala, site manager for Terranor, which maintains roads in Rovaniemi and Kemi. Both Peltoniemi and Ojala noted that litter volumes have remained largely stable in recent years, though tourism and holiday cottage visitors may contribute to the problem.
Peltoniemi warned that resources for litter collection could decline in coming years as agency budgets shrink, though no final decisions have been made.
