A 5.3-kilometre fence is being installed around Rebild Bakker in North Jutland to keep wolves away from grazing sheep, state broadcaster DR reports.
The new hip-high barrier will replace an aging enclosure around the popular nature area, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. An electrified wire will later be added to deter wolves, according to Leif Lyngsø, a forest ranger with the Danish Nature Agency.
“Our old fence is worn out, so we’ve chosen to upgrade to a wolf-proof model,” Lyngsø said.
Around 150 sheep graze in Rebild Bakker, serving as natural land managers by preventing overgrowth of heather with trees and shrubs. While no wolf attacks on the flock have been recorded, wolves have been spotted in the area, Lyngsø noted.
“The wolf is part of our nature, but there are challenges when wolves attack sheep. With this fence, we can ensure the wolf doesn’t reach the grazing areas,” he said.
The entire fence is expected to be completed within the next two weeks.
