The Faroe Islands’ first UNESCO geopark will be established on Suðuroy, according to plans announced by the Faroese Earth and Energy Directorate (Jarðfeingi).
A meeting on 22 June at Salt in Tvøroyri will bring together Jarðfeingi, Suðuroy municipalities, and other stakeholders to discuss the park’s development, reported Faroese public broadcaster KVF.
Lis Mortensen, a natural scientist at Jarðfeingi, stated that Suðuroy’s geological features meet the criteria for a geopark. The initiative follows a recent study trip to Denmark, where Faroese representatives visited the UNESCO-recognised South Funen Archipelago Geopark.
The proposed geopark will offer guided tours and educational experiences.
