Lappeenranta, police investigation, traffic accident

Police in Lappeenranta have questioned young eyewitnesses as part of their investigation into a fatal collision between a car and a moped on Monday evening, Yle reports.

A 17-year-old moped rider died in the crash. Investigators have also interviewed a passenger who was in the car at the time.

Lead investigator Kimmo Vasara said the Mustola area, where the incident occurred, is a popular gathering spot for local youth, and several young people were present at the time. Two eyewitnesses have been heard so far, with more interviews planned.

The car’s driver, described as a young but legally adult individual, is suspected of endangering traffic safety and gross negligent homicide. Authorities have ruled out alcohol or drugs as contributing factors.

Preliminary findings suggest the car struck the moped from behind on a straight section of road. Neither the driver nor the passenger sustained injuries. Weather conditions at the time were good.

Vasara expects a clearer picture of the events to emerge by the end of the week. A forensic examination to determine the cause of death is also underway.
