The Faroe Islands had 55,348 residents as of 1 May, an increase of 615 people or 1.1 percent from the same date last year, according to figures from the Faroese statistics agency Hagstovan reported by KVF.
Net migration accounted for 429 of the rise, while a higher birth rate—35 more births than in the previous period—also contributed. The growth rate nearly tripled compared to the prior 12 months, when it was exceptionally low.
Over 60 percent of the population increase occurred in Tórshavn municipality. The total population first exceeded 55,000 in February.
