Vantaa removes unsafe bunk beds from all daycare centres
Vantaa will remove all structurally unsafe bunk beds from its daycare centres, following a safety review, the city announced in a press release.
The review found that most of the city’s bunk beds are safe, but some models pose serious risks. These will be taken out of use and replaced with safer alternatives. The exact number of beds to be removed will be confirmed later.
The initial cost of removing and replacing the beds is estimated at approximately €220,000.
The city identified around 15 different bunk bed models in use across 130 daycare centres, installed between 1990 and 2026.
In late March, a child at Kelokuusi daycare centre died after being trapped between a bunk bed and a wall. Following the incident, Vantaa immediately updated safety guidelines for bunk bed use, distributing instructions to all daycare centres and reviewing them with staff. Employees were told to raise or lower bunk beds only when no children are present in the room.
In late March, the Safety Investigation Authority issued a hazard warning about bunk beds to municipalities, though authorities have not banned their use.
