2,000 litres of heating oil spilled in Lempäälä theft
Around 2,000 litres of heating oil leaked onto the ground in Lempäälä, Pirkanmaa, after a storage container was tampered with in an apparent theft, emergency services reported Wednesday.
The Pirkanmaa Rescue Department responded to the spill at Destia’s Pitkäkallio aggregate site, where crews are now working with a local contractor to contain the damage. Authorities confirmed the incident did not occur in a groundwater protection area.
The alarm was raised just after 7:20 am on Pirkkalantie road, a few kilometres south of Tampere-Pirkkala Airport. A reporter at the scene described multiple emergency vehicles on-site within a fenced-off area, with operations proceeding calmly. Traffic on Pirkkalantie remains unaffected.
Destia’s Pitkäkallio site supplies crushed stone, boulders, and gravel for construction. The spill occurred during ongoing earthworks involving an excavator.
