Fewer Faroese women than men submit annual tax declarations, leaving many without refunds they are entitled to, according to Hjalti Mohr Jacobsen, tax advisor at Føroya Banki.
Speaking to public broadcaster KVF, Jacobsen noted that women are generally more cautious with financial risks and show less interest in tax matters. However, he stressed that tax refunds—often amounting to a “significant sum”—are effectively lost if claims are not filed. “This is a benefit that, relatively speaking, more men than women end up receiving,” he said.
The persistent gender gap in tax filings only worsens existing financial disparities, Jacobsen warned. “Women already have lower pensions on average, and if they also receive lower refunds, their overall financial position won’t improve.” He urged women to take the step of filing, calling it a “crucial measure” to secure their refunds.
