Denmark’s friendly match against Ukraine in Odense was abruptly halted on Monday evening after midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch, Danish broadcaster DR reports.
Eriksen received immediate medical attention on the field before walking off unaided. He was later transported by ambulance to Odense University Hospital for further evaluation.
The referee and the Danish Football Association (DBU) called off the remaining minutes of the match. Players from both teams quickly formed a protective screen around Eriksen as medical staff attended to him.
Danish national team coach Brian Riemer later thanked the Ukrainian players and staff for their support and understanding during the incident. After the match was abandoned, all players gathered in a circle on the pitch, where Riemer addressed them.
Several Danish players present had also been on the field in 2021 when Eriksen first suffered a cardiac arrest during a European Championship match.
No further details on Eriksen’s condition were immediately provided.
