Finnish public broadcaster Yle’s former news anchor Arvi Lind, known for his professionalism on air and warmth among colleagues, died Sunday at the age of 85.

Lind worked as a journalist and television news presenter for nearly 40 years at Yle, with his final broadcast airing on October 15, 2003. Retired Yle anchors Matti Rönkä and Eva Polttila described him as both a meticulous professional and a beloved figure in the newsroom.

“He always had something funny to say,” Polttila recalled, while Rönkä called Lind “the icon of TV news,” whose career spanned what he termed the golden age of linear broadcasting, when families gathered to watch scheduled programs together.

Rönkä emphasized Lind’s dual role: “He was an extremely controlled, professional news anchor. But he was also the one who kept the team’s spirits up.” Known for his sharp wit and storytelling, Lind was described as a Karjalaispoika—a boy from Karelia—who took care to maintain morale in a demanding work environment. Colleagues trusted his expertise, particularly in language matters.

Outside work, Rönkä remembered Lind as a dedicated family man and sports enthusiast. Polttila noted that retired anchors still met regularly for lunch, with Lind attending as recently as April in good health. “You could see age had caught up with him in some way, but this still came as a shock. None of us are immortal.”
