Police in Kuopio are investigating an attempted murder after a driver in a black BMW allegedly rammed a 17-year-old scooter rider on a pedestrian crossing on Saturday afternoon, according to a report by Finnish public broadcaster Yle.
The vehicle, travelling at excessive speed, struck the teenager around 1 pm local time in the Petonen district, causing the victim to land on the car and remain lodged on it for a short period. The boy sustained injuries in the incident. Police suspect the collision was intentional and are treating the case as an attempted homicide.
A young girl also narrowly avoided being hit by the same car, authorities said.
Witnesses reported the reckless driving to emergency services, prompting police to locate the BMW shortly afterward. Two individuals were detained in connection with the incident.
Authorities have appealed for public assistance, requesting information about the driver’s actions, the car’s movements, and any other dangerous situations it may have caused. They have also urged the girl who nearly went under the vehicle to come forward.
Police have issued guidelines for witnesses on how to report their observations.
