Finnish border guards are investigating a suspected illegal crossing from Finland into Russia and back near Tohmajärvi in North Karelia, Yle reports.
Authorities apprehended a middle-aged Finnish man on Saturday afternoon after detecting the unauthorized crossing within the Tohmajärvi border station’s jurisdiction. The incident is being treated as a state border violation, prompting contact between Finnish and Russian officials.
Riku Heinonen, captain and chief of the North Karelia Border Guard District, told Yle the case appeared “likely accidental” rather than deliberate. He declined to speculate on the man’s motives but noted the crossing did not seem intentional. The suspect reportedly passed through an open wildlife gate in the border fence, typically left unsecured to allow animal movement.
Heinonen did not confirm whether the man returned to Finland of his own accord.
