Finland’s biggest gymnastics and sports event, Gymnaestrada, has drawn over 10,000 enthusiasts to Joensuu this weekend, culminating in a grand outdoor performance on Sunday, reports Yle.
The four-day festival features competitions and exhibitions for gymnasts of all ages, with Joensuu’s compact layout of sports venues, accommodation, and dining areas streamlining logistics. Ella Haring of Joensuu’s Kataja Gymnastics Club noted the city’s centralized setup distinguishes it from past host cities like Tampere and Turku, enhancing both efficiency and atmosphere.
Susanna Porola, head of sports activities at the Finnish Gymnastics Federation, emphasized the event’s role in fostering community and motivation among participants. Gymnaestrada, held every four years, also serves as a stepping stone to the World Gymnaestrada in Lisbon in 2027.
Nearly 500 volunteers are supporting the event, handling tasks from security and first aid to catering and transportation. Hannu Vähäkoski, overseeing school accommodations, praised Joensuu’s Mehtimäki district for its concentrated facilities, which simplify large-scale event organization.
