Finland’s ruling National Coalition and Centre parties open party conferences in Jyväskylä and Tampere
Finland’s governing National Coalition Party and opposition Centre Party launched their annual conferences Friday in Jyväskylä and Tampere, respectively, as both parties prepare for leadership discussions and policy debates over the weekend.
The National Coalition, led by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, is holding its three-day gathering at the Jyväskylä Pavilion through Sunday, while the Centre Party marks its 120th anniversary with its conference in Tampere. Delegates from both parties will elect deputy chairs and party council members, with key figures including Environment Minister Sari Multala and Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen among the candidates for National Coalition vice-chair roles.
Early moments from the conferences included a lighthearted exchange in Jyväskylä, where parliamentary group chair Jukka Kopra entered to applause before joking that fellow MP Timo Heinonen had promised pizza in return for a dance move. Meanwhile, in Tampere, veteran Centre Party MP and musician Mikko Alatalo performed for delegates, and the Narva Brass Band—founded in 1904—provided ceremonial music at the opening.
Former Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, known for his active social media presence, was seen documenting Alatalo’s performance, while Centre Party chair Annika Saarikko received a warm reception from attendees. The conferences will also address policy resolutions, with updates expected throughout the weekend.
Public broadcaster Yle is covering both events with live reports and photo updates.
