NATO’s forward land forces in Finland will be formally established on Saturday, marking a significant step in reinforcing the alliance’s northern flank, the Finnish defence ministry announced Friday.

The unit, designated Forward Land Forces Finland (FLF Finland), will operate under the command of NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, US General Alexus G. Grynkewich. Its core will consist of a Swedish combat battalion of approximately 600 troops based in Boden, supported by a multinational headquarters in Rovaniemi.

Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen stated that the unit is tailored to Arctic conditions and designed to bolster NATO’s deterrence and defence capabilities in the region. “We also provide our allies with the opportunity to train in land warfare under Arctic conditions,” Häkkänen said.

In addition to Finland and Sweden, the UK, France, Italy, Denmark, and Iceland have committed to supporting the development of FLF Finland. The unit’s total strength will eventually reach brigade level.

A ceremony in Boden, Sweden, will mark the official launch, with Finland represented by Permanent Secretary Janne Kuusela from the defence ministry.
