The adoption of Denmark’s first constitution in 1849 not only established a democratic system but also fundamentally transformed the monarchy into the institution recognized today, tying its role directly to the principles of popular governance, state broadcaster DR reports.

For 177 years, the Danish monarchy has operated within this constitutional framework, its functions and limitations defined by the same legal document that enshrined democracy. The 1849 constitution abolished absolute monarchy, redistributing power while preserving the crown as a symbolic and ceremonial pillar of the state.
