Toddler dies after being struck by car in Perho home
A one-and-a-half-year-old child died in Perho on Wednesday after being struck by a vehicle in the family’s yard, local public broadcaster Yle reported.
The accident has deeply shaken the small central Ostrobothnia community of around 2,500 residents, according to parish priest Juha Aronen. “The family is known to all of us,” he said. “This is a tragic situation, and we are trying to support them.”
Perho Church opened its doors Wednesday afternoon for quiet reflection, with parish staff available to provide counsel. The family has requested privacy to grieve with community support, and no official period of mourning has been declared.
Aronen described the incident as profoundly affecting residents, particularly families with young children. “Many are thinking of their own families and children—how to keep them safe,” he said. “When something like this happens, it hits close to home.”
The close-knit rural community has rallied around the bereaved family, with neighbors, relatives, and local crisis support workers offering assistance. “Here, people still know how to help in practical ways,” said parish crisis worker Tiina Karhulahden. Aronen added that the shared faith and tradition of mutual aid in Perho provide strength in difficult times.
“Our task is to meet people where they are, to support and comfort them so they can move forward, day by day,” he said.
