Enontekiö local council plans to acquire the Kilpisjärvi nature centre from state-owned forest agency Metsähallitus for €370,000, with the aim of finalising the deal in early summer, according to a joint announcement by both parties.
The municipality’s council will review the proposed purchase—covering the main building and roughly one hectare of land—at its 10 June meeting. Municipal manager Eero Ylitalo stated the acquisition eliminates the need for a planned expansion of the local multi-purpose facility, as the nature centre will provide space for essential municipal services.
Metsähallitus began exploring the sale of the Kilpisjärvi site last spring amid broader cuts to its property portfolio due to reduced state funding. Olli Lipponen, head of the agency’s nature services, emphasised that the municipality is well positioned to develop the area sustainably.
The nature centre has remained closed pending the ownership transfer.
