A new report by the Kalevi Sorsa Foundation reveals that 75 percent of Finland’s annual agricultural subsidies—totaling roughly €1.9 billion—actively damage the environment, Yle reports.

The foundation, linked to Finland’s Social Democratic Party, found that agricultural emissions account for about one-third of the country’s total greenhouse gas output. National and EU climate targets will require significant reductions in these emissions within the next few years.

The report proposes excluding peat-based farmland from subsidies and introducing a price mechanism for agricultural emissions to align the sector with climate goals.
