A senior Sweden Democrats lawmaker is under investigation for child pornography offences, dealing a heavy blow to the party’s reputation on an issue it has long championed, according to an analysis by Swedish public broadcaster SVT.

The party, which has repeatedly called for tougher penalties for sexual crimes against children, now faces internal turmoil as one of its own MPs—a figure with significant influence—is suspected of involvement in such offences. While no charges have been filed, the lawmaker is the subject of a preliminary investigation and has stepped down from party roles.

SVT reports that the news has sent shockwaves through the party, with MPs describing scenes of distress at its headquarters. The scandal has forced the Sweden Democrats into crisis management, diverting attention from other political priorities. A planned press conference on elderly care was overshadowed by questions about the investigation, with group leader Linda Lindberg fielding queries solely on the matter.

The lawmaker’s resignation also reignites concerns over the party’s narrow parliamentary majority. With two independent MPs already considered unreliable voters, losing another seat without immediate replacement risks tipping key votes against the government and its Sweden Democrats allies. A fresh round of parliamentary voting is scheduled for Wednesday, and the party is pressing the Electoral Authority to fast-track approval of the lawmaker’s successor, Daniel Spiik from Örebro.
