A Finnish district court has sentenced two people to prison for their roles in an organized criminal group that illegally smuggled Somali nationals into Finland in 2025, state broadcaster Yle reports.

The court ruled that a Somali-born Swedish man and a Somali-born Finnish woman operated as part of a structured smuggling network. Both received unconditional prison terms of one year and three months.

The man, who admitted during questioning to bringing an undocumented underage Somali girl into Finland using fraudulent travel documents, was also found in possession of approximately 19 kilograms of khat, a stimulant classified as an illegal drug in Finland. Authorities determined his actions were linked to the broader criminal organization.

The woman was convicted for arranging and procuring tickets in a May 2025 case and for participating in smuggling operations elsewhere in Europe. Investigators believe she played an active role in the network’s activities.

The convictions stem from an ongoing probe by the Finnish Border Guard’s Gulf of Finland crime prevention unit, which uncovered the smuggling ring in May 2025. A Dutch-Somali man was previously sentenced in the same investigation for illegally bringing a Somali woman into Finland that month.

Authorities continue to search for additional suspects connected to the case.
