Rautalampi plans apartment block for growing equestrian high school student demand

The municipality of Rautalampi, home to just 3,000 residents, will decide in August whether to build a new rental apartment block to house students at its specialized equestrian high school, public broadcaster Yle reports.

Demand for housing has surged as the school—known for its equestrian and theatre programs—attracts students from across Finland. Existing student accommodations near the Toholampi equestrian center are now insufficient, according to local officials.

Joni-Matti Kuikka, chair of the municipal board, said construction would take time, so the town is first surveying its own properties for available rental units. Private landlords may also be approached. The goal is to secure initial housing for students by this autumn.

The school enrolled around 120 students last term, with roughly 50 new pupils expected this fall.
