A passenger train struck a car at an ungated railway crossing in Loimaa on Tuesday morning, disrupting rail traffic between Turku and Tampere, Finnish broadcaster Yle reports.
The collision occurred at 7:40 a.m. at the Kytömaa crossing, approximately four kilometres before Loimaa station. Emergency services dispatched six units to the scene but declined to provide further details, stating that responsibility for the investigation had been transferred to police.
Morning train services between Turku and Tampere were cancelled following the incident. Intercity train 905, en route from Turku to Tampere at the time of the crash, was replaced by bus transport between Loimaa and Tampere. A second Intercity service, scheduled to depart Turku for Tampere at 8:10 a.m., was also replaced by buses.
The Kytömaa crossing, which lacks barrier arms, had been slated for closure as part of infrastructure updates. Yle reported in 2021 that plans to replace the crossing with a detour route remained pending negotiations with local road associations. Nearby, a fatal collision occurred at the Piltola crossing in August 2023, prompting calls for improved safety measures—though local opposition has delayed implementation of revised track plans.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the latest incident resulted in injuries or fatalities.
