Plans to build a combined indoor sports and event facility at Pori’s Konepajaranta industrial site have been scrapped after the city’s political groups reached a compromise on Monday, opting instead for a new venue on the former bus station site, public broadcaster Yle reports.

The decision marks a setback for local event organizers, including Harri Vilkuna, a prominent figure in Pori’s cultural scene, who had advocated for the Konepajaranta proposal. “This isn’t the ideal solution for event needs,” Vilkuna told Yle. “Politics is about compromise, and this was apparently the least bad option.”

Vilkuna argued that combining event spaces with indoor sports facilities would poorly serve large-scale events like trade fairs and conferences. While acknowledging the project’s rejection, he noted that alternative options are now under exploration. “I’ve been excited about the Osala plan precisely because it could have hosted major congresses and exhibitions,” he said.

Pori’s Centre Party and Greens had backed the Konepajaranta location, while the Social Democrats opposed it. The city’s political groups finalized the bus station site as the preferred alternative in Monday’s negotiations.
