A former player for Finnish football club Kuopion Palloseura has been remanded in custody on suspicion of three counts of rape, public broadcaster Yle reported Monday.

The North Savo District Court ordered the 18-year-old’s detention on Friday on probable cause for three rapes allegedly committed in March and May, as well as one count of sexual coercion in May. All offences are believed to have occurred in Kuopio.

KuPS signed the player in early March, with the first alleged rape taking place later that month. The club’s legal counsel, Matti Reinikainen, told Yle the suspected crimes were unrelated to the player’s activities with the team, occurring during his personal time rather than on team trips.

The player’s representative stated he denies the allegations. KuPS terminated his contract immediately following the detention.

Prosecutors have until 31 August 2026 to file formal charges. Detective Chief Inspector Terhi Heinonen of the Eastern Finland Police declined to disclose the number of victims or further details, citing ongoing investigative reasons.

KuPS is the reigning champion of Finland’s top football division.
