A player for Finnish football club Kuopion Palloseura (KuPS) has been arrested on suspicion of a serious crime, the club announced Friday. The team’s legal counsel confirmed the alleged offense occurred during the player’s personal time and was unrelated to club activities.

The player was taken into custody earlier today on probable cause, according to KuPS lawyer Matti Reinikainen. “As an employer, we cannot disclose extensive details about the reasons for terminating the contract,” Reinikainen told public broadcaster Yle.

KuPS stated the player’s conduct violated the club’s values and that it treats any such breaches with the “utmost seriousness.” The team immediately terminated the player’s contract following the arrest.

A representative for the accused player told Yle that their client denies committing any crime. While the representative acknowledged the severity of the allegations as assessed by the club, they declined to specify the nature of the suspected offense, citing a lack of authorization to discuss the matter publicly.

Yle is withholding the player’s name, as the case remains under investigation and no charges have been formally filed.
