Hours-long traffic jams have paralysed Amager since Tuesday, with no immediate relief in sight, Danish broadcaster DR reports.

The congestion stems from a combination of roadworks on Kalvebod Brygge and the closure of the Inderhavnsbroen bridge, which connects central Copenhagen to the island. The bridge has been shut since Monday for maintenance, forcing detours through already strained routes.

Copenhagen’s technical and environmental administration confirmed the works on Kalvebod Brygge—part of a larger infrastructure project—have reduced lanes and funneled more vehicles onto Amager’s limited road network. Authorities have not announced when the bridge will reopen or when the roadworks will conclude.

Commuters report delays of up to two hours during peak times, with spillover congestion affecting adjacent districts. Public transport alternatives, including metro and bus services, are operating at capacity but have not eased the gridlock.
