The American-Scandinavian Foundation has established an annual translation prize bearing the name of Faroese literary scholar Turið Sigurðardóttir, Faroese public broadcaster KVF reports.
The Turið Sigurðardóttir Translation Prize will honour the best English translations of Faroese or Icelandic literature, carrying a $2,000 award, a bronze medal, and publication in Scandinavian Review. The first prize will be awarded later this year.
Foundation representatives cited Sigurðardóttir’s contributions to Faroese literature—including her research, teaching, writing, and translation work—as well as her role as a mentor to many. She has been affiliated with the University of the Faroe Islands for decades.
The prize joins the foundation’s existing awards, including the Nadia Christensen Translation Prize, with winners announced in Scandinavian Review.
