Amager roadworks and traffic chaos to last until summer break

Roadworks on Copenhagen’s Amager island will continue for weeks, likely until the start of the summer holidays, the city’s climate and technical administration confirmed Friday.

Jane Snog, district chief for the city’s Climate, Environment, and Technical Administration, acknowledged the severe congestion but said coordination with neighboring municipalities Tårnby and Dragør—as well as state agencies conducting parallel projects—would improve traffic flow. “Typically, drivers adjust over time, and conditions stabilize,” she said. “We expect some relief, especially once Artillerivej reopens just before the summer break.”

Copenhagen Police have issued multiple fines on Langebro Bridge to drivers crossing solid lane dividers during the ongoing lane shifts. Authorities urged motorists to allow extra travel time and exercise caution in work zones.

Line Barfod (Ø), the city’s climate and technical mayor, recognized public frustration in a written statement to DR. “I fully understand the anger over Amager’s traffic situation,” she said, adding that the administration would re-examine options with state energy agency Energinet and other authorities to ease congestion.

Barfod also pledged to raise the issue with city council colleagues and neighboring municipalities to explore further political solutions. “While we strive for optimal coordination, major state infrastructure projects overlapping in the same area will inevitably cause disruption—a concern we’ve repeatedly flagged,” she said.
