Two large renewable energy projects in the Thy region of northwestern Denmark have been approved by authorities, despite majority opposition in non-binding local referendums, Danish broadcaster DR reports.

The decision highlights a key tension in the country’s green transition: while Denmark needs to expand renewable energy capacity, the necessary infrastructure often faces resistance from residents concerned about visual impact, noise, and changes to the landscape.

Local referendums in the area showed a majority of voters opposed to the projects, but the results were advisory only. Authorities proceeded with approval, underscoring that national energy goals can override local objections when siting large-scale facilities.
