The Faroese government will seek talks with Denmark’s incoming administration on the islands’ potential independence, Prime Minister Beinir Johannesen confirmed Thursday.

Speaking in parliament, Johannesen reaffirmed his government’s commitment to pursuing sovereignty negotiations “as soon as a new government is formed in Denmark.” His remarks came in response to questions from Sirið Stenberg, leader of the opposition Republic party, who pressed for clarity on the government’s stance.

Johannesen expressed hope that all political parties in the Faroe Islands would unite behind the sovereignty issue.
