A job-matching method developed by an employment officer in Stockholm’s Järva district has increased placement success by roughly 30 percent, according to research cited by Swedish public broadcaster SVT.

The model, called “Matchning från dag ett” (Matching from Day One), shifts focus from formal qualifications to informal skills—such as attention to detail or problem-solving abilities—often overlooked in traditional hiring processes. Ayse Andersson, the employment officer behind the approach, said it diverges sharply from standard practices at Sweden’s Public Employment Service.

Mohamd Joni, a former glazier from Syria, had been unemployed for two years after arriving in Sweden in 2014. Within two weeks of working with Andersson, he secured a position as a craftsman and now works as a CNC operator. Andersson identified his strengths—caution, focus, and attentiveness—as key to the match.

While not all job seekers find work as quickly, Andersson noted that studies confirm the method’s effectiveness. “Researchers found that the chance of placement increases by about 30 percent,” she said, adding that cost analyses show the model is not resource-intensive.

The approach is now being tested at other Public Employment Service offices across Sweden.
